The vitamin aisle in most drugstores offers a rainbow of choices – brightly colored gummies, shiny capsules, and long, speckled tablets. For those seeking a “clean” multivitamin, though, options are more limited. Artificial colors, fillers, and preservatives are common additives in many formulations. Although generally deemed safe, opinions vary on the potential risks these additives may pose to consumers seeking to enhance their health and wellness through dietary supplements.

For example, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates color additives used in the U.S., requiring evidence that a food color is safe at its intended level of use before it may be added to dietary supplements. Nevertheless, consumer advocacy groups continue to petition the FDA to ban certain synthetic food colorings (some of which are already prohibited in cosmetics), citing increasing evidence of health concerns, especially in children.

Even if such dyes are safe, some argue that their use in vitamins could cover up the fact that the active ingredients in the vitamin have been degraded by exposure to light, air, moisture, heat, or poor storage conditions.

Elevate Your Energy With Wholier: The Clean, Mean Multivitamin for Plant-Based Diets is an original (HealthXWire) article.

Plant-based vitamin supplements are less easy to find

According to a 2019 article in The Economist, 25% of 25- to 34-year-old Americans say they are vegans or vegetarians. While plant-based diets present many health benefits, they also pose the danger of nutrient deficiencies – increasing the need for vitamin and mineral supplements geared toward those on plant-based diets.

For the increasing numbers of consumers following plant-forward diets, clean multivitamin choices are limited. For one thing, gelatin, which is derived from animal sources, is often used as a coating ingredient in tablets or as a filler in capsules and gels. For that matter, relatively few companies offer multivitamins that are specifically tailored to the nutritional needs of vegetarians and vegans, containing essential nutrients that are readily available in animal products but harder to come by in plant-forward diets.

One of these companies is Wholier, a New York-based enterprise producing clean, vegan nutritional supplements. Its Multi for Plant-Based People, designed to fill in the nutrient gaps for customers on plant-forward diets, is made with food-based vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s.

Unique vegetable-based omega-3s

Omega-3 fatty acids are well-known for their various health benefits. In particular, they may help promote brain and heart health and reduce inflammation. In addition, studies suggest potential improvements in symptoms for individuals dealing with depression and anxiety through omega-3 supplements. While most multivitamins rely on fish oil as a source of omega-3s, Wholier takes a distinctive approach by sourcing them from fermented microalgae. This provides a unique plant-based combination of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid).

Food-based ingredients

Iron is a mineral vital to the proper function of hemoglobin, a protein needed to transport oxygen in the blood. It also supports essential bodily functions such as energy metabolism, focus, gastrointestinal processes, body temperature regulation, and the health of hair, skin, and nails. A higher proportion of vegetarians, compared to nonvegetarians, however, have iron deficiency anemia.

Wholier’s Multi addresses this by supplying iron cultured on cooked Koji rice, enriched as the Koji (a Japanese term for “cultured grain”) matures and ferments. Unlike many iron supplements causing gastrointestinal irritation, Wholier’s Multi is formulated to be gentle on the stomach.

Wholier’s Multi also includes other food-based nutrients, acknowledging that natural vitamins are generally considered to be superior when it comes to absorption and bioavailability. This is because natural vitamins are in a form that the body recognizes and can process more efficiently. Among these is K2, a lesser-known vitamin that plays an important role in blood clotting, heart health, bone, and skin health. In fact, a higher intake of vitamin K2 is strongly associated with a reduced risk of heart disease.

Wholier uses a form of pure non-soy MK-7 (a subtype of K2 made from fermented chickpeas), which lasts longer in the body than its counterpart, MK-4. Wholier’s Multi also includes other essential vitamins and minerals that are commonly insufficient or missing in a plant-based diet: iodine from sea kelp; selenium from fermented gluten-free yeast; methylcobalamin  (the active, naturally occurring form of vitamin B12), and zinc citrate (one of the most bioavailable forms of zinc). Wholier’s Multi capsules are also designed for enhanced absorption, featuring a citrus-tasting “no-nausea” formula.

Sustainability efforts

Wholier maintains a unique commitment to sustainability in its packaging and supply chain. Shipping boxes are made from recycled content and sealed with paper tape. Initial orders are packaged in glass bottles or paper tubes, while subscription refills arrive in compostable pouches that are also available for a one-time purchase. These certified materials can be added to home compost or processed at an industrial composting facility, reducing waste by up to 60%.

Additional products delivering essential all-vegan nutrients

Wholier’s compostable pouches are also used to deliver its Night Minerals Magnesium and Calcium Drink, a nighttime beverage mix formulated to support better sleep, relaxation, and digestion. Made with two forms of magnesium from seawater and chelated calcium plus tart cherry juice and organic superfood berries, Night Minerals aids in calming the nervous system, preparing the body and mind for deep, restful sleep. Calcium and magnesium contribute to loosening tight muscles and easing muscular aches, pains, and cramps.

Wholier also offers organic protein powder and nutritional yeast with prebiotics and probiotics. As a reminder, health supplements are not evaluated or approved by the FDA and are not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any disease or health condition. Therefore, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating any new dietary supplement into your regimen.

Wholier:

An up-and-coming industry leader

As a provider of clean, plant-based supplements, Wholier demonstrates a commitment to simplicity. Lisa Gonzalez-Turner, Founder and CEO of Wholier, emphasizes the limited number of ingredients in their products, ensuring customers get precisely what they need – no more, no less.

“No one wants to look at the side of a bottle and see 30 different ingredients,” she says, “we want ingredients that you can know and understand and picture.”

“Legacy players don’t care that much about ingredients,” she continues, expressing the hope that older companies may find inspiration in the clean and simple formulations featured by Wholier.

“We want to ignite some change in the industry as a whole – to get bigger brands to be more thoughtful about what they’re selling to people.” Wholier supplements are available directly on their website, as well as through retailers like the Vitamin Shoppe, Sprouts Farmer’s Market, and Amazon.
